How to Use Trends Without Looking Like Everyone Else?

Each season brings a new set of trends, some of which are fun and some of which are confusing. Also, you’re not the only one who has ever thought, “Should I be wearing this?”

A nice reader recently asked, “How can I add new styles to the ones I already have?” That’s a great question that gets to the heart of the matter: How can you stay up-to-date without feeling like you’re giving up who you are? Style vs. Fashion: Don’t Go with the Flow

Stop following trends unless they really work for you. This is the hardest thing to do. Everyone in the fashion business tries to get people to believe that the next big thing will make their lives better, but we all know that this is never really the case. Trendy things go out of style quickly, sometimes in just a few weeks. To stay happy, fashionistas have to move on to the next big thing.

Look at your life and choose your style

Figuring out your own style is the hardest part because it depends on a lot of things that are unique to you, like your culture, religion, body type, musical tastes, and even, or especially, the weather where you live.

For at least a month, write down every outfit you wear in a style log. This will help you figure out what clothes you need. For each outfit, write down how comfortable it is to wear and how comfortable it makes you feel (for example, are you too dressed up?).

Not Marie Kondon’t

It’s time to get rid of the things you don’t need once you know what you need. Marie Kondo’s “Spark Joy” theory is very famous, but it doesn’t really work here. Being cruel is the key. Remove anything that is forever stained, torn and can’t be fixed, or doesn’t fit (in a good way) right now. If you’re not pregnant, don’t keep a pile of “fat” or “thin” clothes in case you gain or lose weight in the future.

The Wardrobe in a Box

With the clothes you’ve kept, you should be able to build a small outfit. This should have pieces that go well with each other and come in no more than three colors, with at least one neutral color and one color that goes well with your hair and skin tone. Whether this is mostly pants or skirts, sweaters, jackets, shirts, or dresses is up to you and what you need.

Not homogeneity but uniformity

A daily outfit is another way that many people find to make their life easier and less stressed. You already know that not having to think about what to wear in the morning can be pretty great if you have a job that needs a uniform or something similar to be worn every day. It’s important to buy a lot of high-quality things so that you can always have a clean outfit on hand. This makes shopping and washing clothes easy, and it lets you spend your clothing budget on a few key pieces for special events.

Conclusion

If you really want to be trendy, set a (low) budget for the season and buy one piece that you will wear over and over again. We still think you should get accessories or something that you can use in another part of your outfit. Stick with a scarf or t-shirt if you have to have something in that color just to show that you’re in style. You can make them last longer by wearing them under other clothes or even around the house or to sleep in when they’re not in style.
